MBBR bio media reactor consists of a storage tank filled with immersed plastic (usually HDPE, polyethylene or polypropylene) medium with a specific gravity less than 1.0. The large surface area of plastic provides sufficient surface for the growth of bacteria. Biomass grows on the surface in the form of a thin film, and its thickness is usually between 50-300 microns. Each individual biological carrier increases productivity by providing a protected surface area to support the growth of heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria within its cells. It is this high-density bacterial population that achieves high-speed biodegradation in the system, while also providing process reliability and ease of operation.
